Yearly, millions of people worldwide suffer from mood disorders, mental disorders that include depression and mania. It affects not only people who are depressed, but also their families.
The condition is not the ordinary experience of feeling down that commonly occurs in daily life. It is an illness affecting mood, body, behavior, and mind. When the condition is severe, it is impossible for the affected person to function normally and optimally. It can negatively impact important roles, such as spouse, parent, and worker.
Although depression can be treated by available medications and therapies, most depressed people do not seek treatment. Therefore, they experience symptoms unnecessarily to the detriment of self, family, and society.
Other causes of depression symptoms:
* Grief and bereavement- losing a loved one, or the threat of such a loss, receiving a grave medical prognosis or experiencing extremely distressing life events
* Medical conditions cause symptoms of depression which is resolved with successful treatment. Examples: stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and brain tumor. Treatment of the condition, the depression, or both may help resolve the depressive symptoms. Medications prescribed can also provoke depressive symptoms.
* Non-mood psychiatric disorders can co-occur, such as anxiety, eating disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder may be diagnosed during depression
* Substance abuse is common with depression. While substance abuse and depression are independent, their occurrence and, therefore, their treatment, interrelate.
* Childbirth can result in postpartum depression among women, occur several months following delivery and can be treated effectively.
Mood Improvement Methods
* Regular exercise can make a person feel good and look good and diverts attention from stress and anxiety. It does regardless of gender or age. It makes the body produce little feel-good brain chemicals in the process.
* Love life: value daily diversions, build strength and independence, squash stressors, celebrate and share skills, appreciate people- family, friends, workmates
* Let music transform the mood
* Have a healthy breakfast everyday. It thwarts late-day low blood sugar and sugary snack cravings permanently; morning-time low blood sugar produces a brain chemical designed to mask hunger pangs but can cause sugar cravings later; eat complex carbohydrates (whole-grain cereals, steel-cut oats, high-fiber fruits, etc.); power it with protein as protein slows digestion, helps put-off blood sugar spikes and dips, and can even give you a dose of depression-fighting tryptophan.
