Some Information About Body Piercing
Body piercing is the practice of putting holes into the skin in which decorations or ornaments can be placed to enhance ones appearance. People have been doing this for thousands of years. It can be done for medical, cultural, religious or aesthetic reasons. Ornaments can be worn in almost any part of the human body but most commonly in the mouth, nose, belly button and ears. Different types are sometimes favored differently by men and women.
It is most common to see piercings on young people who have them largely for fashion reasons. It is possible to get all kinds of ornaments and jewels to decorate oneself with and the items can range in price which makes it easy to keep up with changes in fashion. Although most common among the young there are some older people that get pierced too. Some religious cults practice piercing and of the major religions Hinduism is the best known for doing this too.
One of the first civilizations to practice this art was the Ancient Egyptians. Proof has been found in the form of five thousand year old mummies in tombs in Egypt that were discovered to have plugs in their ears. This is thought to be one of the first types of body art. It is believed that piercing was something that was done by the rich and important and is therefore a status symbol.
In a similar way Egyptian Pharaohs had gold jewelry in their belly button piercings. This was a perk that was only enjoyed by a Pharaoh and nobody else, including the royal family and important subjects. Belly button piercings are still very popular today.
The bible also documents the this practice as abundant. It was considered a mark of wealth and status. It was given in many cases as the bride price and were widely accepted. It also signified beauty.
In the Roman empire, piercings were used as both a mark of importance and also of slavery. Gladiators were considered to be slaves and they were not allowed to engage in sexual intercourse. This rule was enforced by piercing the genitals so that they could not partake in sexual activities. The piercing of the nipples was a sign that you were loyal to the empire and many centurions had these adornments to symbolize their strength and virility.
Another popular place to wear a piercing is on the tongue. For Mayan people and some American Indian tribes this is a religious symbol. They believe that the bloodletting involved brings them closer to God and is therefore desirable spiritually.
These practices went out of fashion during certain periods in history, particularly in the West where the church condemned it and made it a sin.
It started with what was called the renaissance period during the Elizabethan period during which men actively took up the practice especially sailors. However in the last century this has been mainly in the ears for both men and women.
Different cultural events, like the emergence of rock and roll music, brought body piercing back into fashion. At this particular time, the trend was to have more unusual parts of the body pierced, like the nipples and the genitals. It is usual for conservative women to wear one pair of earrings.
Tattoos for women have become more accepted over the last score of years. More and more females are choosing to get elaborate body art and body piercing.
